Comments: Wonderful memories of singing for Edwin, with background group, 'Splendeur.' In 1974/75; we performed at the Total Experience Night Club, toured the South, New York and South Africa. Opening acts were Arthur Conley and Betty Wright. Wonderful life experiences that I will never forget. May you R.I P.

Comments: I was lucky to see Edwin at Wigan Casino when he performed most of his set before being told that the sound was out on one side of the stage - not that we realised (he filled the stage and hall anyway). 'Let's do it again' was one of the most magical moments of any live act I've seen. Without a doubt, he was top man. > I am getting in touch in the hope that you can fill a gap in my memory. The first time I saw Edwin was at the variety club in Batley. I think it must have been 1970 or 1971. It would be much appreciated if you know the precise date, or have suggestions for when it was likely to have happened. Another great night. I noticed the Wheel boys at the front with one black leather glove punching the air but I had no idea what it was about.

Comments: I met the great man when he played the Flamingo Cleethorpes in the early 90s. No-one knew that it was the last night that the Flam was open. Edwin appeared on stage without his backing band and apologised to the audience. The Flamingo couldn't afford to pay fir hus band but rather than disappoint the fans he came on his own. After two songs with a backing track Edwin stopped the show, turned off his backing tape and told us all that we were his backing band. We all sang the songs with him. He was brilliant. I saw him as support for Jr Walker and Marvin Gaye and he beat them both into a cocked hat. Best live artist ever.

Comments: We saw Edwin Starr at "Oil Can Harry's" in Vancouver in 1974(?). WIKI On line it says he moved to England in 1973, this doesn't make sense? Please clarify, We've never forgotten the performance, he had a back-up band from L.A.. His white Rolls or Bently (?) was parked out front with "Star 1" license plates. I was friends with the owners and had the best seat in the house and we danced all night. We also saw the last show that Ike & Tina Turner did in Vancouver at the "Cave" supper club.

Standout songs for me: Ric-Tic Years: "Back Street", "Headline News" & "Stop Her On Sight (S.O.S.)" Motown Years: "War" (of course), "Twenty-Five Miles" & "My Weakness Is You" Later Years: "Contact" & "H.A.P.P.Y. Radio"

I am proud to have seen him live, and also proud that although there are all genres of music that the UK is the centre of music. And he said on stage that he loved London and England, now the UK. But in my opinion soul and Mowtown was U.S made. RIP Edwin. Met you once and loved it.

Comments: I had the pleasure of working with Edwin in 1991 in Germany including singing backing vocals on stage with him. He was always the consumate entertainer as well as a lovely man and I really miss his sparkling talent.

Comments: Aloha, everyone: I've loved Edwin Starr's music as long as I can remember. Although "War" is his best known song, he's had other timeless records as well: "25 Miles" & "H.A.P.P.Y. Radio" are two others that come to mind. It's hard to believe it's been almost ten years since he's left us, but his music lives on forever. I see Edwin died in Nottingham, UK. I wonder what brought him to decide to live there? He picked a great place to live! Anyway, I'll always think of Edwin's soulful, powerful vocal delivery & those great hit singles! Another great artist gone too soon. R.I.P., Edwin. --D.M.H.

Comments: Today is a good day. At the same time it’s a sad day but with the words to War shared on Edwin’s website, it’s important to remember 40 years ago today, War was #1 on Billboard. He was happy and proud. Since then it has been covered by many – but none so great as Edwin. A special person with a special perspective on the world, the people around him and where he fit in the universe.

Comments: I would just like to say what a genuine guy Edwin Starr was, when he lived at pooley hall he would make visits to the local school where my daughters attended and even once when he couldn't make a charity gig at the local working mens club he surprised them by managing to get the Four Tops to do the gig, he his sorely missed .

Comments: Just relived a lot of Edwins songs as he was the featured artist on Dave Brown's Motown show on Smooth Radio. I was sure that Dave got it wrong about the date of Edwins passing, he said 1993? which was clearly 10 years out. As a 16 year old in 1970 Edwin had a massive influence on me and my music tastes, SOS stop her on sight got played countless times from the Motown Chartbusters Vol 3 album, but more than anything 25 Miles left a massive impression on me, especially after seeing him live in Chester in 1971, I was totally blown away by that show as it was only a small club 'Quaintways' and we were all stood on chairs in a semi circle quite close to the 'all on one level stage', fabulous night. More recently I have got back into scooters and soul and realise what a fantastic artist Edwin was, he did so much for soul fans and soul lovers in the UK as he spent most of his time over here. RIP Edwin you will always be missed and we will always keep the faith by playing and dancing to your wonderful songs.
